Before Your Teeth Whitening Appointment
Should I brush my teeth before my teeth whitening appointment?
Yes. Good oral hygiene before your appointment helps ensure that the tooth surfaces are clean. Brush your teeth as usual before coming to your appointment, but avoid aggressive brushing that could irritate your gums.
Do my teeth need to be professionally cleaned before whitening?
Not everyone needs a professional dental cleaning immediately before cosmetic whitening. However, significant plaque, tartar or surface deposits can affect how the teeth look and may influence the overall cosmetic result.
If you have considerable tartar buildup or concerns about your oral health, consult your dentist or dental hygienist first.
Can I have teeth whitening if I have sensitive teeth?
Existing tooth sensitivity should always be taken into consideration before whitening. Whitening products can sometimes cause temporary sensitivity, and individual reactions vary.
If you already experience significant or unexplained sensitivity, it is advisable to discuss this with your dentist before having a cosmetic whitening treatment.
Can I have teeth whitening if I have cavities or gum problems?
Active dental problems should be assessed by a dentist before cosmetic whitening. Pain, untreated cavities, damaged teeth, inflamed gums or other oral health concerns require dental evaluation rather than cosmetic treatment.
Should I visit my dentist before having my teeth whitened?
Regular dental examinations are important regardless of whether you plan to whiten your teeth.
If you have pain, sensitivity, damaged teeth, gum problems, extensive restorations or concerns about your oral health, you should consult your dentist before booking cosmetic whitening.
Can I whiten my teeth before a wedding or special event?
Yes. Many people choose cosmetic teeth whitening before weddings, holidays, birthdays, photoshoots or other special occasions.
It is sensible not to schedule your first-ever whitening treatment immediately before an important event because individual results and temporary sensitivity can vary.
Understanding Whitening Sessions and Treatment Plans
What does one teeth whitening session mean at Novum Studio?
At Novum Studio, one whitening session means one 20-minute whitening cycle.
A single treatment appointment can contain one, two, three or four consecutive sessions, depending on the treatment you choose.
Express Teeth Whitening includes 1 × 20-minute session, Premium includes 2 × 20-minute sessions, Signature includes 3 × 20-minute sessions and Ultimate includes 4 × 20-minute sessions.
A session should therefore not be confused with a complete whitening treatment plan. It is one whitening cycle within your appointment.
Is one 20-minute whitening session enough?
One 20-minute session can begin to improve the appearance of visible staining and discoloration and may make your teeth look brighter and fresher. However, it provides only a limited amount of whitening time.
Express Teeth Whitening is therefore best understood as a quick brightness refresh rather than a complete whitening journey.
If your goal is a more noticeable change, choosing a treatment with multiple consecutive sessions gives the whitening process more time to progress during your appointment.
Is one Teeth Whitening treatment enough?
It depends on your starting shade, the type of discoloration, how your teeth respond and how bright you would like your smile to become.
A single treatment can produce a visible improvement, particularly when choosing one of our longer treatments. However, even an Ultimate Teeth Whitening appointment with four consecutive 20-minute sessions should not automatically be considered the end of the whitening process.
For clients who want to work progressively towards a significantly brighter-looking smile, more than one treatment appointment may be appropriate.
Rather than expecting one appointment to create the maximum possible result, teeth whitening is better viewed as a process that can be built up progressively according to how your teeth respond.
How many Teeth Whitening treatments may I need for a more complete result?
There is no universal number because every smile starts from a different shade and responds differently.
For clients who want to work towards a more extensive whitening result, a treatment plan of approximately 2–3 whitening appointments may be appropriate, with the treatment level chosen according to the desired result and individual response.
For clients who want to maximise the whitening time at each appointment, this may involve 2–3 Ultimate Teeth Whitening treatments, with each Ultimate treatment consisting of four consecutive 20-minute sessions.
This does not mean that every client needs three treatments or that a particular final shade can be guaranteed. Some clients may reach a result they are happy with sooner, while others may require a different approach.
The objective is to build the result progressively rather than promise that a single appointment will produce the maximum possible whitening result.
Why can several treatments produce a more noticeable result than one appointment?
Teeth whitening is a progressive cosmetic process.
Multiple consecutive sessions within one appointment give the whitening process more time to work during that treatment. Additional treatment appointments can then provide further opportunity to continue working towards a brighter-looking result.
This is why there is an important difference between the number of sessions within one treatment and the number of treatments within your overall whitening journey.
Your individual response should always determine how the process is continued rather than assuming that more whitening automatically means a better result.
Which Teeth Whitening treatment does Novum Studio recommend?
For clients who want a clearly visible whitening improvement without immediately choosing our longest treatment, Signature Teeth Whitening is our recommended treatment, consisting of three consecutive 20-minute sessions.
For clients who want to maximise the whitening treatment time available during a single appointment, Ultimate Teeth Whitening includes four consecutive 20-minute sessions and is our most extensive single-visit option.
However, choosing Ultimate does not mean that your whitening journey must end after one appointment. Depending on your starting shade, individual response and desired result, additional whitening treatments may be appropriate.
What happens after I reach the whitening result I am happy with?
Once you have achieved a brighter-looking result you are happy with, the focus changes from building the result to maintaining it.
Coffee, tea, red wine, smoking and other staining habits can gradually affect the brighter appearance of your teeth over time.
For existing Novum Studio whitening clients, we recommend a Whitening Touch-Up approximately once a month, depending on lifestyle, staining habits and how well your teeth maintain their brighter appearance.
A Touch-Up consists of one 20-minute session and is intended to refresh an existing whitening result rather than restart the whitening process from the beginning.
During the Teeth Whitening Treatment
What does teeth whitening feel like?
The experience varies between individuals. Many people find cosmetic whitening comfortable, while some may notice temporary tooth sensitivity or mild gum discomfort during or after whitening.
You should always tell your specialist if you experience discomfort during your appointment.
Can teeth whitening cause sensitivity?
Temporary sensitivity can occur with teeth whitening. How much sensitivity someone experiences varies according to the individual, the whitening product and other factors.
Sensitivity associated with whitening is generally temporary, but persistent or significant sensitivity should be discussed with a dentist.
Why do some people experience sensitivity after whitening?
Whitening agents interact with the tooth structure to alter the appearance of discoloration. This process can temporarily increase sensitivity in some people.
Existing sensitivity, the condition of the teeth and individual response can all influence the experience.
What should I do if my teeth feel sensitive after whitening?
Avoid very hot or very cold foods and drinks if they trigger discomfort, and continue gentle oral hygiene.
Toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth may be useful for some people. If sensitivity is severe, unusual or does not resolve, contact your dentist.
Can teeth whitening irritate the gums?
Temporary gum irritation can occur if whitening material comes into contact with soft tissue.
Any unusual, severe or persistent irritation should be assessed appropriately.
What does the LED light do during teeth whitening?
LED systems are used as part of some cosmetic whitening protocols alongside whitening gel.
The whitening product is the key component of the treatment; an LED light should not be understood as independently whitening the teeth without a whitening product.
Teeth Whitening Results
When will I see the result of teeth whitening?
You may notice a change in the brightness of your teeth following your whitening treatment, but the amount of visible improvement varies between individuals.
The result depends on factors including your natural tooth shade, the type and depth of discoloration, staining habits and how your teeth respond to the whitening process.
A single 20-minute session provides considerably less whitening time than a treatment containing multiple consecutive sessions. Likewise, one treatment appointment does not necessarily represent the end of your whitening journey.
Clients seeking a more extensive change may choose to build their result progressively across additional treatment appointments.
Why do teeth whitening results differ from person to person?
Everyone starts with a different natural tooth shade and different types of discoloration.
Age, lifestyle, staining habits, tooth structure and previous dental work can all influence the final appearance. This is why identical results cannot be guaranteed for every client.
Are naturally yellow teeth easier to whiten than grey-looking teeth?
Different types of discoloration can respond differently to whitening.
Yellow or surface-related discoloration may respond differently from grey, internally discoloured or medication-related teeth. The cause of the discoloration therefore matters when considering expected results.
Can teeth whitening remove coffee and tea stains?
Whitening can improve the appearance of discoloration associated with common staining habits such as drinking coffee and tea.
The extent of improvement varies according to the type, depth and duration of the staining.
Can teeth whitening help with smoking stains?
Whitening may improve the appearance of some tobacco-related discoloration, but the result varies.
Continuing to smoke can also contribute to new staining and may shorten how long a brighter appearance is maintained.
Will every tooth become exactly the same shade?
Not necessarily. Teeth naturally vary in colour, translucency and structure, and different teeth may respond differently.
Whitening aims to create a brighter overall appearance rather than guarantee an identical shade for every individual tooth.
Why do my canine teeth sometimes look darker than my front teeth?
Natural differences in tooth structure can make canine teeth appear slightly darker or more yellow than neighbouring front teeth.
Whitening may improve their appearance, but natural shade differences can remain.
Can very dark or internally discoloured teeth be whitened cosmetically?
Some deeper or internally caused discoloration may respond differently from ordinary surface staining.
A tooth that has become unusually dark, particularly a single tooth, should be evaluated by a dentist because the discoloration may have a dental cause requiring assessment.
Why can teeth look different immediately after whitening?
The appearance immediately after whitening may not always represent the final settled shade.
Temporary changes in tooth hydration can influence how bright teeth appear directly after treatment, so the appearance may change slightly afterwards.
Eating and Drinking After Teeth Whitening
Can I eat after teeth whitening?
Follow the aftercare instructions provided with your treatment.
In the period immediately after whitening, it is sensible to be cautious with strongly coloured or highly staining foods and drinks.
Can I drink coffee after teeth whitening?
Coffee is one of the drinks commonly associated with tooth staining.
Limiting coffee immediately after whitening and reducing frequent exposure over time can help maintain a brighter-looking result.
Can I drink tea after teeth whitening?
Dark teas can contribute to staining.
Following the recommended aftercare period and limiting strongly coloured drinks can help preserve the cosmetic result.
Can I drink red wine after teeth whitening?
Red wine contains strong pigments that can contribute to tooth staining.
It is best avoided during the initial aftercare period following whitening.
What foods should I avoid after teeth whitening?
During the initial aftercare period, it is sensible to avoid strongly coloured foods and drinks that can easily stain, such as dark sauces, strongly pigmented foods, coffee, dark tea and red wine.
Follow the specific aftercare instructions provided after your treatment.
Can I smoke after teeth whitening?
Smoking and tobacco use contribute to tooth discoloration and can work against the cosmetic result of whitening.
Avoiding smoking after treatment and reducing or stopping tobacco use can help maintain a brighter appearance.
Can I drink water after teeth whitening?
Yes. Water is generally the simplest drink choice after a whitening treatment and does not contain the pigments found in common staining drinks such as coffee, tea or red wine.
Oral Care and Maintaining Your Results
Can I brush my teeth after teeth whitening?
Yes, but follow the aftercare instructions provided with your treatment.
Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, particularly if your teeth or gums feel temporarily sensitive.
Does whitening toothpaste keep teeth white?
Whitening toothpastes primarily help with surface stains and can be useful as part of regular oral hygiene, but they do not necessarily reproduce the effect of a whitening treatment.
Some whitening toothpastes can also be relatively abrasive, so they should be used according to their instructions.
How can I keep my teeth looking brighter for longer?
Maintain good oral hygiene, attend regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings when appropriate, and limit habits that contribute to staining.
Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco are common factors that can gradually affect tooth colour.
Once you have achieved a whitening result you are happy with, maintenance treatments can also help refresh the brighter appearance as everyday staining gradually returns.
What is a Whitening Touch-Up?
Whitening Touch-Up is a maintenance treatment for existing Novum Studio clients who have already completed their initial Teeth Whitening treatment or treatment plan with us and achieved a result they want to maintain.
It consists of one 20-minute whitening session designed to refresh the brighter appearance of your smile as everyday staining gradually returns.
It is intended for maintenance rather than building the initial whitening result from the beginning.
How often should I have a Whitening Touch-Up?
Once you have achieved a result you are happy with, we generally recommend a Whitening Touch-Up approximately once a month.
The ideal frequency can vary depending on your lifestyle, staining habits and how well your teeth maintain their brighter appearance.
Can I book a Whitening Touch-Up if I had my original whitening treatment somewhere else?
No. Whitening Touch-Up is exclusively available to existing Novum Studio clients who have previously completed a Teeth Whitening treatment with us.
This allows us to maintain a consistent treatment history and know which products and procedures were used during your previous appointment.
If your previous whitening treatment was performed elsewhere, you can book one of our regular Teeth Whitening treatments instead, subject to suitability.
Will my teeth become stained again after whitening?
Yes. New discoloration can develop over time.
Teeth are continually exposed to food, drinks and lifestyle factors, so whitening should not be considered permanent. Good oral hygiene, reducing staining habits and appropriate maintenance can help preserve the brighter appearance.
Does drinking coffee through a straw prevent staining?
A straw may reduce direct contact between some drinks and the front teeth, but it does not completely prevent exposure or staining.
Reducing the frequency of strongly staining drinks and maintaining good oral hygiene are more important for long-term maintenance.
Does rinsing with water after coffee or tea help?
Rinsing your mouth with water after consuming strongly coloured drinks can help remove some residue from the mouth.
It does not completely prevent staining, but it can be a simple addition to good oral hygiene habits.
Cosmetic Whitening and Dental Work
Can whitening change the colour of dental bonding?
Composite bonding and other tooth-coloured restorative materials generally do not whiten in the same way as natural tooth structure.
Whitening natural teeth may therefore make an existing colour difference more noticeable.
What if my fillings or crowns no longer match after whitening?
Because restorations generally retain their existing colour while natural teeth may become brighter, a colour difference can sometimes become more visible after whitening.
If this is a cosmetic concern, discuss your options with your dentist.
Should I whiten my teeth before getting new veneers, crowns or bonding?
If you are planning new cosmetic dental restorations and also want whiter natural teeth, discuss the order of treatment with your dentist.
The final shade of natural teeth can be relevant when a dentist selects the colour of new restorations.
Can dental implants be whitened?
The artificial crown attached to a dental implant does not whiten like a natural tooth.
If an implant crown is visible in your smile, consider discussing colour matching with your dentist before whitening surrounding natural teeth.
Lifestyle and Long-Term Questions
Does age affect teeth whitening results?
Natural tooth colour and the type of discoloration can change with age, so age-related changes may influence how teeth respond cosmetically.
Age alone does not determine the final result; the condition and characteristics of the individual teeth are more important.
Why do teeth become darker over time?
Tooth colour can change due to ageing, food and drinks, smoking, surface staining and changes within the tooth itself.
Some medications, dental conditions and previous trauma can also affect tooth colour.
Is teeth whitening permanent?
No. Cosmetic whitening does not permanently prevent future discoloration.
How long a brighter appearance remains depends on oral hygiene, diet, smoking, coffee and tea consumption and other individual lifestyle factors.
Once you have achieved the result you are happy with, periodic maintenance can help refresh the brighter appearance over time.
Can I repeat teeth whitening?
Yes, but whether and when another treatment is appropriate depends on the product used, your previous treatment, tooth condition, individual response and the result you want to achieve.
Some clients may build their initial result across more than one treatment appointment before moving to maintenance.
Whitening should nevertheless be performed according to the appropriate treatment protocol rather than simply repeated as frequently as possible.
Is more frequent whitening always better?
No. More whitening does not automatically mean a better cosmetic result.
The objective is to build the result progressively while considering how your teeth respond. Whitening products should be used according to their intended protocol, and excessive whitening can increase the likelihood of sensitivity or irritation.

Teeth Whitening at Novum Studio
Is Novum Studio a dental clinic?
No. Novum Studio provides cosmetic aesthetic services and is not a dental clinic.
Teeth Whitening at Novum Studio is intended to cosmetically improve the appearance of natural teeth and does not replace dental examination, diagnosis or treatment.
What should I do if I have a dental problem rather than cosmetic discoloration?
Contact a dentist.
Tooth pain, damaged teeth, gum disease, unexplained discoloration, persistent sensitivity and other oral health concerns require appropriate dental assessment. Cosmetic whitening is not a treatment for dental disease.
